Republican on the throne is a good book which I found very engaging through out most of my reading. For young Ethiopians who aspire to know how a turn of event led to the revolution and then to our current plight should read this book and learn a great deal. Even though I am a big fan of Emperor Haile Selassie the author tries to point out where it goes wrong under the Emperor final years in power. As a cabinet member under the Emperor and then the early days of the military junta the author takes us where no one took us before the inside dealings under the military junta where millions were killed after they took power from the Emperor. It is sad to count out how many educated and people who were wiling to work for their country were perished under the evil leadership of Col. Mengistu Haile Mariam who still enjoys a safe harbor in Zimbabwe thanks to Mugabe.The Author personal accounts in the three regime he experienced in Ethiopia has in the past half a century also shows how the country goes from an OK state to a one disastrous one. He also faced a false charge with the current government and thrown to a jail. For such distinguished person not only from locally but at international arena to be thrown in jail under false pretense shows how people in the government exploit the rule of law for personal reason says a lot about them and the political system the country face currently. It is sad after 37 years of highly anticipated revolution the country is still going backward and the young still try to advocate for a democracy with unworkable multi party system because it has no genuine honest basis.I would like to thank the author for working on this memoir. He is not only show us things from different angel he also shed a light to many dark things we only know in not clear terms.
